Top photographer Taryn Rahl is sharing this beautiful E-Shoot with us today. Taryn says:”Beate has been a ballet dancer for most of her life… so she wanted to incorporate the ballet theme into their E-shoot. As Johannes is not familiar with Ballet, we couldn’t exactly put him in tights and points, so I suggested that we turn it into a vintage styled ballet theme shoot. Beate’s sister, Carla, who is also a ballet dancer, was with us on the shoot, and she was able to guide us with a few ballet poses. We also used these photographs in a guestbook, which I designed for them to use on their wedding day….A few weeks after this shoot, I had the honour of photographing their wedding… but that’s another chapter of this amazing fairy tale…..”
Tell us a bit about the couple
Everyone was so easy to work with … this was their very first shoot together as a couple, and both of them were amazing … Almost every pose was perfect, as they were so comfortable with each other … every time they looked at each other, there was that ‘sparkle’ in their eyes …There is something really magical about this couple, and I think these photographs portray the love that they have found for each other.
Their love story: how they met and fell in love …
Definitely a fairy tale! My grandmother and his mom decided to play cupid and the rest is history. We started talking while he was working up in North-East Africa. We started off by sending each other one facebook message a day. We had so much in common, such as a love for the ocean, scuba diving as well as animals. Later on I (Beate) asked Johannes whether he had a Blackberry so that we could bbm each other and not wait for a whole day to speak or communicate. We were obviously glued to our phones. Johannes then asked me if we could go for coffee as soon as he arrived in Port Elizabeth for his three week visit. Apparently he couldn’t wait because the very day that he landed was also our first date. Our first date was thus on the 16th of September 2012. He asked me to go to church with him. From the moment I laid eyes on him, I knew he was a keeper … We saw each other every day for those following three weeks. He eventually asked me out on the 30th of September 2012. He flew back to Eritrea on the 4th of October 2012. From there on we had a long distance Skype relationship (which we hated!). It was terrible not being able to touch each other. Even though the Skype relationship was frustrating it gave us the opportunity to get to know each other very well. We spoke for hours every night. My dad constantly had to buy more data for these lengthy sessions. The biggest passion we share/shared on our Skype sessions was music. We downloaded our favourite songs and played it back to each other. (This was the biggest reason why my dad had to buy new data every week). We got to know each other’s likes and dislikes. After a very long three months, Johannes returned to South Africa. From here on our relationship just grew stronger and we became inseparable. Johannes asked me to marry him on the 13th of February 2013. Our fairy tale!
Any trends or style you really enjoy shooting at the moment
I love to bring out something about the couple’s personality into the shoot. And when a couple is willing to go to the extent of making their e-shoot special by planning it properly with me, organising an assortment of different outfits to choose from on location and having their hair and make-up professionally done for their engagement shoot it really makes it so much more special and it makes such a difference to the quality of the final product. Something that they will be proud to show off for the rest of their lives… My style: I love the “natural” look… if I could name my photographic style, I suppose I would be describing my own personality…always outdoors, country-girl, a bit of an arty forest-fairy. I love the sunshine and when I can, I often like to grab the opportunity to include a bit of lens-flare into my photographs to add that feeling of warmth into a photograph… I love soft colourful florals and I love shooting amongst trees
One last word
I am a photographer, based in Port Elizabeth, specialising in weddings, portrait and family photography … but my heart belongs to Knysna and the Garden Route area…so my heart skips a beat (and I do a little happy dance) everytime I book a wedding or a shoot in the Knysna/Garden-route/Tsitsikamma area. I love shooting in nature, farmlands and forest areas.
