Lovebirds | How did you two meet?
We met at the University of Stellenbosch at the end of our second years. Our respective residences collaborated for the annual JOOL (participating together in different activities and raising money for charity) and we went on tour around the Western Cape to raise money. This is where we first met. We were both on the house committees of our residences so we had to spend a lot of time together at the beginning of our third years during JOOL and that is where we really got to know each other and our story began.
I said Yes | How did the proposal go down?
Henk took me for a special picnic in the beautiful Kirstenbosch Botanical gardens in Cape Town. He packed the basket with all my favourites. Unfortunately all the tourists made it hard to find an alone time for Henk to pop the question. Eventually we were alone and he went down on one knee, proposing with a ring made with a plastic pearl we picked up from the street 4 years earlier. We weren’t even dating then and I jokingly said he should use it when he proposes one day. He had kept the pearl all those years, saying that he knew then already he would marry me one day.
