Jan Folmer & Elisabeth Stavenga got married on 8 May 2012, in the chapel of the Champagne Castle Hotel (Drakensberg), with only their families there. On 18 May 2012 they celebrated their wedding with their family & friends at Café Felix in Riebeek Kasteel. Tyme Photography captured those everlasting moments in style.
I Propose | Elaborate on how the two of you met
Jan & I are both Dutch, but met in Cape Town in 2006. We met in a bar in Long Street and I gave him my number. “I’ll call you on Monday”, he said. And yes, first thing Monday morning I received his call! The proposal was completely unexpected, because he organized a couple of surprises before actually popping the question. So I got kind of adjusted to the ‘surprise’ dates, and didn’t think much of the surprise that he had planned for me. On an early February morning we drove to the Winelands for my surprise. At the break of dawn we arrived at a nursery just outside Stellenbosch, and drove to the back. I was over the moon when I saw the hot air balloon that two guys were busy rigging up! It was my dream to go on a hot air balloon flight, and felt exhilarated that it was going to happen! As we went up, the sun peaked over the mountains, and the light over the vineyards was just so pretty! Then he popped the question, and I didn’t think twice. The pilot was prepared. He took out bubbly, chocolates, and biltong. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire flight. We were in the air for over an hour and it was so quiet and peaceful, like as if it was only us that mattered in the world.
Bride & Prejudice | Express some memorable experiences you had during the planning
I loved all the pampering, and trials. I’m usually not a big spender on beauty pampers, and enjoyed the excuse. Best was the make-up lesson at Bobbi Brown that I did because of the 2 different locations, to be able to do my own make-up.
I also loved how the family got involved in making our décor. My Mom made the ring pillow, my sister-in-law crafted some last minute popcorn sachets for the popcorn confetti, and my mother-in-law did all the flowers. It was so special how they spent their time to contribute to our day!
My Fair Wedding | Describe an event that you feel was unique
I got to wear my dress twice! It was our dream to get married in the Drakensberg, as we completely fell in love with the area during our first holiday together. We also wanted a very intimate wedding only surrounded by our families, which was very special.
Don’t Tell The Bride | Reveal something that happened behind the scenes
The balloons on arrival were a big surprise for us. Jan’s sister had relied on distant relatives in South Africa to organize it, but the day before the reception it appeared that they had let them down so they quickly had to look for alternatives. Mariette from Boegalu was on the ball, and very quick to organize so that we still had our balloons there!

My best advice would be to split the wedding like we did in a day for the ceremony and a day for the reception. Our wedding day started at 6am, and I’ve enjoyed every minute thoroughly. It was such an intense day full of emotions, and by 7pm I was finished, and ready to get out of my dress. I don’t think I would have been able to enjoy the day to such an extend if I were to have a reception on the same day. But whatever format you choose, just relax and enjoy the ride, accept that things will go wrong, you won’t notice it in the pictures afterwards.
